CHAPTER 10

Balls slammed across the gym as Logan sat on the bleachers with other sidelined players.

It was down to Serafina to hit their opponent out and give their team the win or get struck and have them take the loss.

He bounced his leg and cheered when Serafina threw the ball back at the opponent. It was just a game. If his nerves could get the memo and stop jittering, he might catch his breath.

They’d worked as a team to eliminate the opposing team’s all-star players and succeeded. But then, a woman on the opposing team caught the ball and brought back their best player, the one Serafina was up against.

That Serafina was the only one still on the court, while Logan and two others were eliminated, was a statement in itself. Her ponytail danced against their team’s red T-shirt as she hurled the ball toward the muscular man.

The game went back and forth with balls flying. She knew when to duck to avoid getting struck. Yet she was fast—too fast. Logan jumped when she caught the ball thrown at her.

Everyone on the sideline cheered, and they sent him in.

He jogged over to the drawn rectangle and high-fived her. “Great job!”

“I learned from the best.” She winked.

Their conflict from four days ago had already been over at church the next day.

The whistle blew, and his adrenaline surged as they rushed toward the middle and grabbed the colorful balls alongside the centerline marker. In the attack lines, she hurled balls at their opponent, and he did the same.

You’re going down. They’d eliminate the man in no time.

Win or lose, something about dodgeball always made a bad day slip away bit by bit with every throw.

As they got caught in a battle of balls, everything happened so fast when their opponent whipped a ball right on Serafina’s forehead.

The whistle blew, and the game was put on hold.

Logan’s heart rate kicked up as he tossed the ball to the floor and ran to her. She held her head, wincing and staggering.

“Are you okay?”

Her eyelids fluttered closed, so he slid his arm to her back and led her off the court. Everyone on their team and the opposing team sprinted over to check if she was okay, but he thanked them and requested they step back. She didn’t need them crowding her and blocking out the fresh air.

“Go back and play...” she said breathlessly as he helped her settle on the exercise mat at the other side of the gym.

Concussions could occur from a single or multiple blows to the head. However, Serafina hadn’t been hit that many times. Still, he always had a medic on standby whenever they played, even on their practice days.

“I’m fine.” She kept repeating as the man shone a low-beam flashlight into her eyes.

As soon as the medic confirmed she was fine after asking her questions, Logan asked her questions of his own, needing to make sure she was okay.

“When was the last time you danced?” His cheeks flushed the moment the question rolled off his tongue.
